Why being a self-employed Virtual Assistant / Home Based Business Owner Rocks my World!

Our daughter recently gave birth to her second child (our second grandchild)… which is pretty amazing – especially since I don’t feel old enough to be a Nanna! She lives 5 hours drive from us, and she wanted me near to help with her 2 year old daughter as she got closer to her due date. Of course, I was thrilled to be called on at this special time in her life!

It dawned on me as I was getting organised to head off in the weeks preceding the birth that, had I been employed in a conventional full-time bricks and mortar / employee role, this would have been far more tricky to coordinate. Yes, of course, an employed worker would have been able to take time off – I get that – but what they can’t do (generally) is pack up their office (i.e. laptop – because, let’s face it, it’s all cloud-based when you’re a VA), jump in the car and head off with the intention being to work from a different location knowing with absolute certainty that it will have virtually NO IMPACT on standard workflow!

And it did really go like clockwork! With a few slight alterations to my work day, the change was barely felt by clients, and I managed to bill a full week while I was away PLUS spent loads of time with my daughter as she awaiting the imminent arrival.

I think that's awesome... and so do my clients! It literally rocks my world when I think about the amazing opportunities I have in my own business!

Similarly, I have packed up my office and taken it overseas with me while I visit family who live on the other side of the world. With a bit of forward planning and thought, you can still kick your work goals while you’re away. To be honest, the only real change for me was that I was getting up at 5am so that I could be online for some of the time that my clients were online. I would then work until about 9am, leaving me the rest of day to spend time with my family and / or be the tourist…
